This role requires extensive practical knowledge of horticulture, pest management, and operating specialized equipment. The main duties involve expertly planting, cultivating, and caring for various plants, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and specialized flower collections, often according to established landscape designs. The worker must regularly perform detailed tasks such as pruning, hedging, and trimming to maintain plant shape and encourage optimal growth, utilizing a wide range of hand tools and power tools such as mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers. Essential responsibilities also include soil health management, which involves preparing soil, applying fertilizers, mulch, and amending soil composition as needed, alongside managing complex irrigation systems to ensure appropriate watering for different plant species and seasonal demands. A key function is plant health monitoring; the Skilled Gardener must be able to quickly diagnose and treat common plant diseases and pests using both organic and chemical control methods safely and effectively.
